no joke!
Parody Master Class

Take it from the guy who wrote Barry Trotter and the
Shameless Parody, the biggest-selling self-published comedy book in
history: if you know how to do it, parody can make you rich.
In an era of canon-obsessed, self-aware fandom, publicity driven by conventions and social media, and a strong distrust of gatekeepers and authority, parody is everywhere. And this will only increase as mega-corporations hunt for intertextural ways to monetize their long-in-the-tooth franchises, from Star Trek and the MCU, to LEGO and Barbie.
You’ll learn:
- Why parody’s the comedic form of our era
- How to pick the right target (and avoid ones that will get you sued)
- How to tune your approach so you never run out of steam
- The fine points of plotting and
- How parody/pastiche can supercharge any type of writing.
The American Bystander’s Editor & Publisher Michael Gerber will take you through the step-by-step creation of a new longform parody book, so you can create projects that fans will love and corporations will buy!
Plus, you’ll receive the following BONUS content:
- A parody Preflight Checklist before you begin writing; and
- the ten classic print parodies that belong in every serious parodist’s library.
If you’re young talent shooting for the top of the field, or an experienced writer looking to create parodic work to move your career forward, this course is for you. Week One begins June 26, 2023. Enroll today and receive our 30% pre-registration discount!

Meet the instructor
Michael Gerber
Michael Gerber is the Editor & Publisher of The American Bystander, but forget that. He's been the guiding spirit behind The Yale Record humor magazine for 35 years, but that ALSO is beside the point. For the purpose of this class, all that matters is that he is the author of Barry Trotter and the Shameless Parody, a book-length parody of the Harry Potter series, which sold over a million copies and caused a brief craze throughout Europe for American-style print parody.
